Personal Injury in Chicago: general information

General information, not legal advice. Ask a lawyer about your situation.

  • Illinois generally gives you two years from an injury to file a personal injury lawsuit, and claims against a local government body can have much shorter notice deadlines. Ask a lawyer early which deadline applies to you.
  • Under Illinois Rule of Professional Conduct 1.5, a contingency fee agreement must be in writing and say how the fee is calculated, including what happens to costs. Read it before you sign.
  • Ask who at the firm will actually handle your case day to day, and how often you should expect an update.
  • Keep photos, medical bills, the police or incident report number and the names of witnesses together. A firm will usually ask for them at the first meeting.
